Skin surface irregularities like scars and fine wrinkles can be significantly improved through a procedure known as dermabrasion.

About Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is the mechanical scraping of the top layers of skin using a high-speed rotary wheel, essentially polishing the skin, softening the sharp edges of the irregularities, and making them much less noticeable.

Dermabrasion works on both small areas of the face, such as around the mouth, or the entire face. Results are best when applied to wide and shallow irregularities. Many times dermabrasion combined with other procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery, or chemical peel. Patients with extensive wrinkles or deep acne scars may require dermabrasion in stages to achieve optimal results.

The size of the area being treated determines how long the procedure will take. Small areas may take only minutes, while a full dermabrasion session can take an hour or more. The procedure is conducted on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia. After surgery, an ointment may be applied to the skin along with a wet bandage. You may feel a tingling along with burning or aching after the anesthesia wears off, but medication should control this.

After Your Dermabrasion

The day after your surgery, the bandage is removed and healing begins. Right away a scab or crust forms as the skin begins to heal and, soon, a new skin forms underneath. Swelling will subside in about a week after surgery. Your skin will have a pinkish color, and it will be at least a week, probably two, before you can wear light makeup and feel comfortable in public. Afterwards you should avoid direct sunlight, since dermabrasion takes away a layer of pigmentation. Exposure to the sun might result in permanent light or dark spots. Even when your pigmentation returns, you should try to avoid direct sunlight and wear a sun block or a hat.

Cost

$951 is the national average cost for dermabrasion, though accounts for the physician's fee only. The total cost for a procedure may vary by physician and include additional fees for anesthesia, surgical center or hospital stay, supplies, and other necessities.
