How Facelifts Work

The facelift procedure usually takes from two to five hours to complete. It is almost always done on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia in addition to sedation.

Step 1-The surgeon makes an incision along the hairline from the temple down around the ear lobe and to the back of the neck. A small incision can also be made under the chin to remove any excess fat.

Step 2- After separating the skin from the muscle and fat underneath, it is pulled up and back and the remaining skin is removed. Fat deposits can be removed and sagging muscles can be tightened.

Step 3-After surgery, any pain or discomfort can usually be controlled with medication. The dressings are taken off in a few days and swelling and bruising will disappear within two weeks. You may experience a numbness or tightness in your face or neck, which will get better as you heal. Your final result probably won't be fully realized for at least three weeks and you'll need to limit your exposure to the sun for the first few months after surgery.
